Issues in Haiti spilling over

planner

This post is not intended to get into a lengthy discussion of the "issues" Rather it is a warning to anyone thinking to cross the boarder for any reason.

From Dominican Today:

29 bus passengers from the Dominican Republic were kidnapped in Haiti

At least 29 people aboard a bus traveling from the Dominican Republic were kidnapped in Haitis Croix-des-Bouquets district. According to the Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste, the kidnapping occurred yesterday, Wednesday, January 18.

During the kidnapping, the outlet confirmed that nine of the 37 passengers on the bus escaped from the scene. So far it is unknown if the people have been released. The news will be updated as more information is available.

The bottom line is you are taking your lives in your hands crossing! Please be careful.

DRVisitor

Who generally goes - people who live or have family in Haiti?

planner

There are some tourists and 做厙輦⑹s who ask about crossing the boarder either to reset their tourist visa or to "see" Haiti for themselves.

DRVisitor

Can you lierally walk or take uber across to reset your visa?

planner

It's not that easy. It costs to get out and come back over and it does not reset your tourist card! Entry from Haiti to DR was and may still be US 60 and they did not take pesos. Dollars only.

Last I read there isnt a government in Haiti that functioning I read its broken into Seven zones and each zone is controlled by gangs and warlords 色. Theres no food , gas , water and they just lost their last democratically elected government色 why would someone want to go there色佞

It's surprising how many times I get asked about it!

I'm staying with a Haitian friend in DR and she just shrugged her shoulders when I told her about this..

She continues to finish building her house there. She says the problems are in the cities, not the rural areas.

planner

I know some Haitians who live and work here legally who are seriously worried for their friends and family in Haiti. It's sad for the people!
