Driving is safe and easy.

Roads are perfect and clean.

Domestic drivers are well educated.

Enforcement is top notch but not needed.

Right of way is always given.

Driving at night is romantic.

Dominican traffic has the lowest death toll in the world.

Hello Papito NL,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I am curious, do you think other members would agree with your take on driving in the Dominican Republic? 😅

@Papito NL

Not sure where your data is from?

All depends where in the country you are driving.

Would recheck the data , easy Google it! :)

@Cheryl

Any insight on Dominican traffic will be negative so I tried a different approach 😉

The opposite of my remarks is the reality.

As a pedestrian, there are times I've been tempted to call an Uber just to get across the road 🤣 ... though I am getting better at recognizing those little micro-gaps and pushing through. Sometimes it seems safer to jaywalk in the middle of a block because you only have two directions to keep an eye on. Sometimes I just wait for other people to cross and follow them.

Another thing from a walker's perspective is you can't be so focused on the traffic that you ignore the space between the sidewalk and the road, which can have all sorts of surprises in it, including uncovered drains. There's one in my neighborhood that goes down almost as deep as I am tall.

All of this gets more interesting when it rains and the sides of the road start to flood -- if you saw a fat old lady doing a Spiderman routine on the side of the malecón in Santo Domingo yesterday, it was me😜. You definitely don't need Sudoku to keep your mind engaged here!

Traffic and driving here is not for the timid.  Walking and crossing the road can be  very hazardous to your health.

The rules of the road DO NOT APPLY here, well most of the time. Drivers are badly educated,  Licenses can be bought.  Police can be bought off.

From the news this week: " 24 muertos y más de 2,500 accidentes de tránsito en 11 días".  24 dead and over 2500 accidents in the last  11 days!

We have the highest fatality rates on the road! Most are motorcycle drivers and passengers.  Dont get on a motorcycle taxi, motoconcho. You will be taking your life in your hands.

The rules are ignored, its survival of the biggest.  I drive and have for many years and I hate it.  I do not drive at night as its even worse. Now imagine driving at night in the rain. Nope.

Roads are NOT well maintained.  Potholes are all over the place. When repaired they do not fix the actual problem they just cover it over.

Crossing the street is  dangerous, needs to happen but we must be always on guard!  You need to look constantly for what is coming at you especially in the direction against traffic.  Even  walking on the sidewalk is perilous.  Holes, leaning poles, motorcycles on the sidewalk etc etc.

Never ever assume a vehicle is going to stop for you!  Fastest way to get a visit to emergency.

I just roll down my window and when the motorists see it it is a grey haired white senior woman they let her have the right of way!
