Tap water do's and don't's

wondering9

Another newbie question! this about what to do while Airbnb-ing (not, eg, about installing a home system).

Just how hard-core do you have to be about tap water safety?

Does it differ in different parts of the country?

Is it safe if boiled? (Can you use it for rice, noodles, coffee, tea etc.?)

Can you brush your teeth with it? Can you rinse your toothbrush with it?

Are there other potential contaminants, like metals, to worry about that can't be fixed by boiling?

(If location does matter, I'm in Santo Domingo right now but intend to visit lots of places as soon as my interview/medical are done, so I'm interested in anywhere you might want to comment on.)

Thanks as always!

You may get varying answers to this, but I can provide my opinion. I would not ingest ANY water in any way here (drinking, brushing teeth, etc). I don't believe the water is reliable in any region of this country. The problem is although water is treated at the source the delivery infrastructure is unreliable (e.g. breaks in water lines, infiltration). You may get away with boiling the water for so many minutes, then you need to let it cool and keep it reliably stored. Water is available in 5 gallon containers here rather cheap. Get one and a small pump for the top. If that is too large for transport you always have the ubiquitous small water bottles for purchase at any colmado.

Agree with above. I cook with tap water  only if it will stay at a gentle boil (minimum) for at least 13 minutes.

Do NOT use for making coffee.

After 21 years I do brush my teeth with tap water being careful not to drink it

Don't use plain tap water to wash fruits or veggies!  I add white vinegar to the rinse water.

And I am a bit different, again.  I preface this with saying in the 2 homes I've owned, I've had a whole home purification system installed and always recommend them.  But, in the rentals I've lived in and in hotels, I do brush my teeth and rinse with tap water.  I cook and make coffee with unfiltered tap water as well.  But like Planner, I add a sploosh of vinegar to a sinkful fruits and veggies the day I buy them, and then store them in a sealed container in the fridge.  Other than Strawberries, this has extended their life from mere days to over a week, often times 2 weeks.  I haven't had any issues with this method, but I was a garbage man for over a decade and have been exposed to quite a lot and have a robust immune system.

Unlike my hubby (RockyM above), I used tap water on my toothbrush in all our rentals - except for the one with well water that smelled like sulfur!

As he said, the big 5-gallon bottles are inexpensive, but if you can't get those delivered, you can buy gallon bottles almost anywhere. And I highly recommend the pump that goes on top of the bottle rather than a gravity dispenser. I can't hoist those big bottles up into the dispensers without making a mess! We've also found quite a few uses for those pumps, too - like emptying the drain pan under the fridge and moving water from our overfilled jacuzzi to the pool.

I brush my teeth with tap water but don’t use it for cooking. I second the convenience of a small pump on the 5-gallon bottles. We have a rechargeable usb pump which lasts long enough on a charge to not be annoying.

My mother-in-law has an under the sink filter in Santo Domingo. She started with a 90 day filter change. It was disgusting at 90 days, so it is now a 45 day filter change. Our water in El Portillo, Las Terrenas is very sketchy to say the least. Sometimes full of sediment, so we only use the 5 gallon jugs. The gravity dispensers have a spike in the center. If you leave the top on the jug and cut an “ X “ into it, it will slip over the spike without spill water everywhere.

As a single female with shoulder issues, I bought water dispensers where the bottle is underneath! Those I can change myself! They cost a bit more but for me it's worth it.
