Tax implications, US citizens bldg in Roatan

Docmani

Hi forum,

Since the US has no tax treaty with Honduras, what are the implications, concerns regarding taxes if one decides to build a home in Roatan and have rental income from it when not occupied.

Are there any other tax implications we need to consider?

If anyone is in a similar position, would appreciate any information.  Thanks!

You have 2 choices. You can not claim or mention the build to the IRS and earn income tax free. Of course then you would have no tax write offs either which can even include several "inspection trips" per year. Or you can claim the house  and write offs and pay taxes on the income. Most people opt for the former method. What tax bracket you are in can also make a difference.

Thanks for the reply IslandEd1, appreciate it.

Hello,

One more thing.

IRS requires you to declare bank accounts in other countries. If you note it on your tax return and they ask you may get caught.

I am not sure but have been told there is a 10k limit before you have to file.

Thanks for the info!
