Cost of retirement living in parts of France, Spain and Italy.

Navrig

I appreciate that this is a difficult question to answer but I will ask anyway.

My wife and I like the lifestyle which can be found in parts of France, Spain and Italy.  We are giving serious thought to retiring to Europe from the UK when we retire in 5 years or so.

Our preference would be mid-south France, small town/rural area.  However our experience is limited to holidays in France and we have generally found the cost of day to day holiday living to be high in France.

I have made comparisons between France and Spain on the web and it suggests that there can be quite a difference in the general cost of living with Spain being noticeably lower than France and, to a lesser degree, the UK.

However I appreciate that retirement living is not always representative of the cost of living so I am trying to get a feel for the reality of the difference between France and Spain for a retired couple.

Our plan would be to rent somewhere and rent out our UK house until either we move permanently or we decide that it's not for us.

Any thoughts on the cost of retirement living in France compared to Spain?

Welcome to the Forum

5 years is a very long way away, and so much can change in that time. With Brexit looming that can also change decisions, like health care. There is also talk of the possibility of raising the pension age to 70.

I hope that is some kind of help.

Sort of but not really.

5 years is a long way off but that doesn't stop thinking and planning for which we need to consider information.  That's what I am seeking.

Brexit - may or may not affect us but it doesn't stop the thinking and planning.  My wife can get an Irish passport and I am looking into that too.

Pension age may or may not vary but my finances are based upon my private pension which I can already access if I want.

So back to my original question......
