Query regarding belgian work permit and belgian ID.

simonkit

Hello everyone

I came to Belgium on a work permit as a software engineer for a leading telecom company with a 1 year stamped visa in my passport from my home country (valid until jan 2024). After arriving in Antwerp, I booked my appointment with the town hall for registration and for my Belgian ID which is on 25 May.

Now the problem is that after a few months I have to leave my current job due to some personal reasons. What specific options do I have at the moment? Do I still have to register at the town hall on the 25th? will I get the Belgian ID of 3 years (the work permit was originally of 3 years under the category highly skilled)? I am looking for a new job right now. Please let me know the possible options I have rite now regarding living in Belgium.

Thank you.

First of all only people with Belgian citizenship are entitled to a Belgian ID. You will probably receive a residence permit. There is huge differences between ID VS residence permit.

Secondly, your visa/work permit/residence permit all together is linked to your employer.

If you quit the job or if you are fired the right to stay in Belgium will end as well regardless visa validity or residence permit validity. You will have to return back to your country of citizenship.

Have you actually received an ID card or is it processing at the moment ?

I believe you have 60 days from the end of your last work contract to find a new job and initiate the process of new WP on your existing residence permit confirming your stay is legal in Belgium else leave the territory. You get a letter from the commune to confirm this but don’t wait for the letter to know the dates to keep in mind.

hold tight and wish you all the best.

I registered at the Town Hall as soon as I landed in Antwerp and received my Annex 49, which is valid until 17/7/2023. In this email I was told to come to the appointment on the 25th of this month with the following documents.

- this invitation (you can also use your smartphone to scan this QR code)

- valid passport and Belgian residence permit (= Annex 49)

- Annex 46 and economic migration permit

- recent passport photographs

- Your bank card

The ID process could be in progress or it would have started after the appointment, which I don't think it will now. Not sure though.

hey hey, please how do you register at the town hall? Do you just visit the address without an appointment?

what’s the process involved?

@Nkechi1

it depends on the commune, some commune only works with appointments and some don't need appointments.

@Rudra1985 thanks for your response. I’m asking about the Flanders region
