Dog owners be aware of this in Cyprus

phildraper

Being the 1st country we have lived other than the UK I was not aware of Leishmaniasis and the seriousness for dogs.

I have been told that this can be a real issue in Cyprus and the UK tick and flea spot on is ineffective. Apparently we need a special collar from the vet that lasts for 8 months and affords 80% protection. We should avoid taking the dog to any wetland area as the biting insects live there! There is also a vaccine but it is recommended to use a collar as well. Can't be too careful so I will be visiting the vet and handing over the 45eur apparently for the collar.

Anyone bringing their dog (or cat) should be prepared for this and the fact that ticks are a bigger issue in Cyprus than the UK in spring.

Leishmania I believe is from sandfly .. but ticks are bad news too

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by a protozoan (single-celled) parasite found in dogs, cats, and certain rodents in many parts of the world, most commonly in rural areas. The parasite is transmitted by small biting sand flies. It is an important disease to be aware of because humans can also contract leishmaniasis.

Take great care my friend i have friends with a dog that has this and it's a very expensive and continuous treatment.
