Hmmm very interesting article Toon, thanks for sharing. It confirms my experiences in Cyrpus of comparitively very low wages with other European countries, and the general cost of living is really quiet high for example supermarkets and clothing and household goods such as furniture etc are really on a par with UK if not even more expensive. I know rents are generally cheaper and maybe the general property prices are lower also.

Although I agree that wages are low eg the average wage for retail is between €4 and €6 per hour there doesnt seem to be any statutory minimum wage here, however I dont see much evidence of poverty here like in other countires. The coffee shops and restaurants I see full, lots of people driving new cars and other signs of relative wealth, it doesnt add up how the low wage levels can fund such lifestyles.

Wages are low and many people are doing more than one job.....  not necessarily legit but working for cash to make ends meet....

Yes there are somethings that are expensive  but you can manage that by buying when it's on offer... fresh fruit and veg are nt expensive. . I agree furnishings electrical appliances can be expensive but once again you can buy elsewhere and then have it shipped and still be cheaper than buying here.

But in our experience it's swings and roundabouts but still cheaper to live here than our homeland.

yes I agree, there are many people working 2 or 3 jobs to keep afloat, and a lot being paid cash in hand, although this was a problem for them during Covid 19 as their employers werent making social insurance contributions for them which left them high and dry for any govt help.

Also your point about shopping around for goods is also very true, and it is possible to get good value.

You are right of course that on balance  it is cheaper, indeed restaurants here offer very good value, and also you cant put a price on the sunshine, which helps to lift the spirits.

So all in all  although wages are low, still its a better lifestyle, even though people may be working harder and longer hours to maintain a living, the weather definitely contrubutes to the feel good factor.
