best place to live in London will depend on how much you can afford

I've only lived in Central London but know it quite well.
Depending on your job, it might make sense to be close to work. When I worked in Canary Wharf, I lived in Marylebone which had a relatively smooth commute to work. For your sanity, I would avoid Canary Wharf because weekends there are horrible and depressing.

If you're not "price sensitive" here are the best places with pro's and con's
1. Mayfair- very central and "posh" but difficult to find and can be expensive. I lived here for a brief period and it would be my top choice in London.
2. Chelsea/South Kensington/Knightsbridge - too remote personally but great for families, shopping, fewer tourists.
3. Marlyebone/Fitzrovia - more affordable but still close to anything you could possibly need, green space as well. great for families and quiet. i remember hearing conversations of people walking down my block because it was so quiet on weekends but also extremely safe due to parking regulations and CCTV.
4. Soho - some parts are grungier but plenty of modern apartments and easy access to most locations in central London within 30 minute tube ride, close to Mayfair and good food options. maybe not so quiet.
5. Victoria/Westminster - quieter in certain areas, more affordable rent but still central and quick commute to the City and Mayfair and enough firms here which could mean a 5 minute walk to work
