Change a student visa to an Ausbildung visa

Sara Sarkhosh

Does anyone know if it's possible to change a student visa to an Ausbildung visa?

I came to Germany on a student visa, and I've been here for 6 months now. The university gave me a condition to improve my German skills before starting the program, so they allowed me one year to work on my language. At that time, I wasn’t aware of the Ausbildung option and was focused on learning German. I’ve been taking private German classes at a language institute.

Now, I would like to switch from a student visa to an Ausbildung visa and not continue with the university.

Does anyone know the requirements or if this change is possible?

I think it might be possible but one usually needs a C1 level of German to do a university program taught in German as the vast majority of bachelors are at public universities. An Ausbildung is a vocational or technical training. It can be a good choice  - depending on what career you want. But one needs a B2 level of German for nearly all Ausbildung programs, B1 for the few exceptions. They're never in English or other languages. Not quite the same level but one still has to learn a high level of German regardless...

You need to ask your local Ausländeramt whether this is possible and what the requirements are.

Basically it should be possible, but the rules seem to differ from place to place.
