My dad is German. Please help me understand.

tanja daendler

Hi All,

Please help me understand if I have the right to be German.

My dad is German and my mom is Filipino. They have been married for more than 25 years but he recently passed away. I have all his documents.
.Ìý
My questions are

1.Ìý Can I apply for a German citizenship.
2. If yes, and I want to get married my boy friend, would it still be possible to get the German citizenship if I marry him?

Thank you in advance. :)

You cannot APPLY for the German citizenship, because you probably already have it (by birth if one of the parents is German citizen).
Go to the nearest German embassy to sort out the paperwork.
Being married or not has no implications on citizenship.

I'm afarid it is not as easy as this. My girlfriends father is German as well, but she was denied a German passport because she was born before 1981. And second, Germany doesn't allow dual citizenship (there are exceptions though). You might have to give up your present citizenship to get the German one.

Thank you  for both of your replies.

I was born in 1990. So I am guessing it is fine.

Double citizenship is allowed for those who acquire it by birth.
Only those who apply for it have to renounce their previous one(s).
