Is Milan really all that ugly? I've never been, but I can't imagine it is that horrible a place ...

ok, IMHO

Let's say that Milan is the second most important city, right? After Rome.. Rome is beautiful! It's caothic, ok.. but "magic"

Milano, from a touristic point of you, has just Duomo, Galleria and Castello Sforzesco, then it's pretty much a business city. the people is quite awful, stressed, always running and always indifferent to the other people. But there are a lot of beautiful places just getting out of the city :-)

Milan actually reminds me of some parts of Berlin: ugly, but in a charming, raw way. If it's not magic, it certainly has a strong personality!

You are right - Roma is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited, definitely top 3 on my list. Have never been to Milano though. So you won't recommend a visit there yourself, will you?
