From London to Bonn - getting to know other families

anna sing-elke

Hi there,

My family moved here from London a little over a year ago, but with Coronavirus and the lockdown, we haven't gotten to know very many people in our new home city. I am also finding it difficult to find online the kinds of activities that might help us, in particular my 13-yr old daughter and 10-yr old son, to meet other people. Ongoing youth activities seem difficult to find. I don't know if that's because of Covid restrictions or if it is the case in general. In the UK, there were a number of different apps and websites that helped to locate clubs and lessons in your region.

I had thought that group German lessons outside of school might be good for them to meet other non-native German speakers, but they are proving extremely difficult to find for school age children. (Even the Goethe Institut couldn't think of anything off hand!) Sports might be an option, but my daughter is only interested in long distance running and softball, and my son in handball.

Many of the threads here seem quite old. I just wanted to see if anyone is out there and has any suggestions.

There are youth centers (Jugendzentrum) in most cities that provide activities for kids. Not sure if thy might be closed due to Covid. Otherwise, there are all kinds of clubs, not just sports but also things like chess or book club etc. I don't know Bonn personally so I couldn't do more than a online search.
