Advice for moving to Gibraltar?
Hi,
I'm 24 years old and from Glasgow, and me and my friend are considering moving to Gibraltar next year - likely from January 2014-December 2014 although that might change. We both work online. So I was just looking for some advice to see what it's like to live in Gibraltar and if there's anything important I'd need to know.
Can anyone confirm whether I would need some sort of residency certificate to stay for a year? I lived in Albufeira for 3 months this summer and to stay beyond 3 months you need to apply for a residency certificate but being from the UK and Gibraltar being UK owned, I'm guessing I basically don't require anything?
Obviously prices for renting varies based on location/size etc but can anyone give me the ball park for what I would be talking to rent a reasonably sized 2 bedroom apartment per month? Also, what about near the beach/ocean view vs more inland?
What's the nightlife like in Gibraltar all year round? I lived in Albufeira for 3 months over the summer and it was great but being a tourist resort the place is really meant to be a Ghost town over the winter months. Is the same with Gibraltar, or is night life booming all year round? I think 60% of people living in Albufeira per year are tourists, anyone know what the figures are for Gibraltar?
Being UK owned, I'm guessing pretty much everyone speaks good English? Or is it the case of a lot of Spanish people have moved over who don't speak English?
Finally, what's the weather like in January-March, Oct-Dec months. Obviously it's gonna be a lot better than Glasgow but is it still decent temperature wise or cold?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
Mikey
Hi Mikey
1) Residency certificate, whilst this is not compulsory you will need it to access healthcare etc.
2) Rent, see :- propertygibraltar.com/
There is no inland we are too small
3) I'm too old for nightlife but it is there all year round, Gibraltar is not an overnight stay for tourists.
4) The official language is English and the majority speak it, the local language is Llanito which is a curious mix of English / Spanish and some local words and is spoken by the Gibraltarians amongst themselves, but you will not have a problem unless you have a very strong unintelligible Glasgow accent. Many workmen are Spanish and only speak Spanish, the Moroccans are multilingual.
5) Weather-wise it is less extreme than many areas of Spain and Portugal due to the proximity of the sea. In winter it rarely drops below 10c and in summer rarely above 30c

Hi Mikey
I now live in Gibraltar and moved here from Paisley at the end of 2011! Uptill then I was working in Springburn.
So, weather yep, can get cold at night and you might occasionally need wellies! When it rains it rains and there is nowhere for the water to go, therefore VERY OCCASIONALLY roads flood. I can remember cursing myself for selling my wellies at the Fruit Market car booty b4 I left lol!
However yes it is still far far better than your current location. I tended to find I needed jumpers in the evening.
Property very expensive, think London and you are near the mark. My boss has just rented a three bedroom flat, 4th floor, average to small and pays £1,200. Cheaper to rent in the winter though as you will get a better deal.
Yes, I would say you do need your residency card but you can only get that once you have a property and a job.
I only speak English and yes, mostly all speak English but many do Spanish too.
Work wise, I registered with several agencies and finally found work from an agency called Recruit Gibraltar. They were honest from the outset that jobs are few and far between, expecially as I wanted part-time. However in the end, they were great and I have to say got my perfect job!
However, you say you work on-line, Gibtel (the only provider here) is great and well priced too. My bill for phone and internet is aroudn £50 per month and unlimited download!
Gibraltar town is very small, a main street, a few off that and a place called Irish Town (basically it is one street!). NB, the agency I used are behind the Police Station in Irish Town.
I only come on here once a week but feel free to ask me anymore questions and I'll try to help, as we are coming from the same space and place lol.
Regards
Jessica if you really are living in Gibraltar you may have noticed in the last few days what Gibraltar flag looks like

Hi Mikey
Contrary to what the previous post questions, I can guarantee I DO LIVE IN GIBRALTAR!
Just because I might not have the correct flag and do not spend all my time updating profiles, should not call this into question! I happen to be a busy lady in a busy world with bigger things to worry about :-)
Moving is a big step and I would be happy to assist in anyway I can and as I moved from the same area, I might have certain suggestions or knowledge specific to you and your situation.
Kind regards
I'm interested in moving to Gibraltar. Would like some advice from °µÍø½ûÇøs.

Hey Mike,
I've been working and living in Gibraltar since June after moving from London (Vancouver, Canada before that) and am 30.
If you're a UK citizen you can stay all year round, you need to go get some paperwork done about taxes etc. if you work for an employer here but they should sort that out for you.
Rent in Gibraltar is expensive, I'd say almost London prices. A studio costs around £800 so I would imagine a 2 bedroom is going to be £1000+. I know one colleague who got shared housing in the town center for £400 a month and I 4 guys I work with have a massive place near the border which they pay £1600 for but those sorts of deals are difficult to find. I've heard if you go to the south side you can find nice places with fantastic views for less money but then it is a bit of a pain getting in and out.
I live in La Linea (the Spanish town just over the border) and I think generally speaking that's a way better option. La Linea gets a bad rap but really there is just one part of it which is a bit shady. Generally you are paying half price what you would in Gibraltar and often the apartments are much nicer and more modern. I live have a modern, 4 bedroom apartment (don't even know what to do with the room!) with a pool right on the border, it takes me about 15 minutes to walk over to the town center so its perfect. I pay £750 but you can find much cheaper than that if you get something smaller and further away from the border. If you are driving you can live 10-15 minutes drive away and find much, much nicer places but parking can be a bit of a pain I think.
The big night out in Gib is Friday and its not bad although you do start seeing the same people over and over again once the summer is over and the tourists are gone. Saturday most people go out in La Linea Spanish style which I guess as you know from Portugal doesn't even start until about 1am and its not bad. In the summertime Terifa and Marbella are close by and have fantastic nightlife and if you really want to go out Malaga is 2 hours away on the bus and is good all year round.
Everyone in Gibraltar I've met speaks English while almost no one in Spain does. The Spanish are not big fans of Gibraltar belonging to the UK. (:
Days are usually pretty good, as long as its not rainy or foggy temperature is usually between 15-20. It can get very cold at night though and because most of the housing has marble floors and no central heating you'll feel it worse than you do in Scotland! Luckily the winter isn't all that long and it starts warming up considerably in March. Its October now and a few days ago it was 28C, everytime I think its winter there seems to be one last gasp of summer weather. (:
Hope that helps!
Hi there. Currently I live with my family in London. We would like to move to Gibraltar. It's been over 9 years now. Time for some change. Just wondering if our plans will go further because Gibraltar has a lot of bad and good opinions on-line. Not sure if this is the right place for family or just individuals. How is to live in GIB too??? Any suggestions OR opinions I will be very appreciate. Thanks
