Which is the best website/podcast to learn Greek?

rogergarinmichaud

Hello and good day from down under !

I believe the subject title is self explanatory, so what is in your point of view the best website to learn Modern Greek and Classical Greek ?

I have come across greekpod101.com by Innovative language and also on Youtube there is Easy Greek (for Modern Greek)

For Classical Greek I found the Ancient Language Institute and also Open University

But I do not know which is really the best and would not want to start anything until I know what I am getting into

Hi Roger,

My lawyer once told me: “Greek is one of the most difficult languages to learn”.

I've been in the process since September, and I have to admit he was right...

I'm at ease in French, Dutch & Flemish, English and almost in Arabic and Spanish as well... So I thought I'd have an easy time of it, but believe it or not, I'm hardly nowhere.

Learning this language takes TIME (1 to 2 hours /day), and a don't have that time...

My only advices:

  1. Don't try to learn ancient and modern Greek at the same time. You may get confiused with some pronouciations. Modern Greek is based on ancient Greek, but also on the various modern dialects. Over time, modern Greek has also been “simplified” => don't be fooled by this word... Today, there are 6 different ways of writing the /i/ sound. Very confusing for a non-native.
  2. Find a Greek speaking person who can correct your pronounciation. Tonal accents are a major key in Greek. Greeks often speak fast and bind their words. You hear 3 words where there are 6...

Good luck!

Regards

I have been using MemRise [[link moderated]] recently and very impressed. Used some alternatives over the last year but nothing was really sticking. I have even paid for the premium subscription, that was a first.

Great many thanks for the lengthy reply and like you I find very confusing the Greek alphabet (I am always trying to learn reading before anything, at least I can understand streets signs and shops names...) with n that is i and v that is something else)

I will receive soon the Greek reader by the Joint association of teachers (Cambridge University Press) and start reading and writing with it..

As a retired teacher of French as a Foreign language I know that total immersion is best so my guess is that I will greatly improve once on site (Athens, Heraklion and Lakonia)
