Sharing our experience – tips for saving money while moving abroad

info911

Hello everyone!

We are Daniela and Ralph, originally from Germany, currently living in Portugal and now preparing our move to Ireland – most likely to the Cork region.

I (Daniela) have a professional background in healthcare, hospice work, and as a writer/translator, especially in the fields of psychology and medicine. My husband Ralph worked for many years as a neuropsychologist and is now retired, though still very active.

Over the years in Portugal we have learned how important it is to manage the cost of living consciously. A few strategies that helped us a lot:

Local markets & producers: Fresh products are often cheaper and of better quality than supermarkets.

Second-hand & exchange groups: Great for furniture and everyday items, saving money and resources.

Compare & negotiate: Whether internet, insurance, or other services – asking and comparing almost always pays off.

Community: Sharing resources with neighbors or other °µÍø½ûÇøs, from car rides to bulk shopping, reduces costs and builds connections.

We’re excited to learn more tips from those of you who already live in Ireland and to exchange experiences along the way.

Warm regards,

Daniela & Ralph

Hello Daniela & Ralph,

Welcome to °µÍø½ûÇø 😀

Thank you for sharing your experience and those great tips. I am sure they will be useful for many here as well.

I am curious, have you already started looking into housing or specific neighborhoods in Cork? That is often one of the biggest factors when it comes to managing the cost of living.

I am sure members already based in Ireland will be happy to share more practical advice and strategies with you.

Cheers,

Cheryl
