help required on residence permit for italy

markdogma

³ó¾±,Ìý
i am travelling with my wife and currently staying in switzerland before hopefully going on to italy at end of january

we are travelling on british passports even though we reside mostly in australia ( we also have Australian passports)

we entered switzerland beginning of november with a view to stay in europe for at least 8 months, i have now found out as a result of brexit we can only stay in europe for 90 days from jan 1 2021

so i am trying to find out how easy it will be to get a residency permit for italy so we can base ourselves there for next 8 to 9 months? has anyone had recent experience of doing this. I do not need to work as have sufficient passive income from investments etc

we are due to be in como in feb so was thinking this would be the place to apply , any assistance would be appreciated

the only other alternative would be to exit europe to the uk in march and then return a few weeks later on our australian passports ?

thanks mark

I'd try another country if I were. I don't know about other parts of Italy, but there's a huge backlog of residence permits due to the covid quarantines from earlier in the year. I know people who had their finger prints taken as far back as June who still don't have their permits.

thanks, do you know if you can stay in italy why waiting for the decision on the resident permit ?

If you are travelling on a British passport you only need to be able to prove you were living legally in Italy before the 31st of December and technically have until June to finalise the paperwork. But given no one ones what a post-Brexit world will look like the consulate are strongly recommending you submit your paperwork before the end of the year.

As you say you are financially self-sufficient to be legally resident you must either own a property or have a legal rental agreement in your name in Italy and have health insurance to cover all eventualities. You submit the paperwork to the comune (town hall) where you have taken up residence, they have two days to acknowledge it and then 45 days to process it. In that time the police will come to your house to check that you do actually live there. But like others have said, there is a backlog here at the moment and how long it will take depends on your comune and each townhall is fairly autonomous so you need to check with the one you are applying to.

There is loads of excellent info on the living in Italy pages,   of the gov.uk website that explains this all in more detail.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Edit: Oh, and yes you can be in the country while they process the application. Also bear in mind that if you are applying for residency the expectation is that you will spend at least just over half the year in the country.

thanks for that great info

are only issue is we planned to be in italy in early december but with the new restrictions
we cant get there in time for the dec 30th deadline ?

i don't believe we can get someone else to apply for us, so not sure if requirements will
change after jan 1

frustrating from tomorrow we will be a few kms from italian boder while staying in switzerland

is it fairly easy to complete the paperwork as had quotes of 1200 euro per person to assist

regards

No you cant get someone to apply for you, that would defeat the entire point of the process.   HOwoever to get a PdS and thereby residence you need to make sure you have health insurance, an address with a regular contract, and proof of income.
