Hi,

you will need to go to the ID office in Valletta.  Fill in a form. Once this is done in about a week they will send through a letter to your permanent address.  Once you have this you will then have to go back to the office and have a picture done, then to another room and the ID is processed....

Obviously you will need your passport, proof of where you are living, etc...

Thank you! I will do that tomorrow I guess. Do you know when should I go? Or there are a lot of people all the time? :)
Best regards,

Hi Andrea,

welcome to the forum.

For the ID card you don't need to show a rental contract. They send the letter to the address you give them. You will need your passport and a certified translation of your divorce certificate if you happen to be divorced.

But you will need to show more details ( rental contract, etc registration/work contract ,health insurance entitlement and so on) when you apply for ordinary residency.

There is usually a queue at the ID card office so you just fill in the form and wait in line.First you will have a police officer check your details, then a photo taken and then you wait in another queue to have your application processed. A week later you get the mentioned letter and have to go back to have another pic taken and then you can collect your ID card after queuing again.

But it is free of charge!

Like the guys say its easy, took my wife about 40minutes. quite well organised. Passport and marriage cert is what they asked her for. But she had everything with her in case, seems sometimes different people in the same office ask for more, so go prepared. And research where it is, miles away from the NCP/Bus station. Jim

I agree with you Jim its very very easy.

If you are driving just go around Ring Road (Smirks) and park outside.... its very near the Fort.

Need to be there in the morning...

Can you still drive a UK car after you have the id-card ?  if so what is important part of the card, or is it the first step to other things like medical etc. Jim

residents cannot drive foreign plated cars. By applying for an ID card you are declaring yourself a resident
