Hi Ken,

there are not really that many left that are not in trouble.

After Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Spain (bank bailout),Italy (look at the interest rates for state bonds and state debt level), France ( slowly getting into trouble), Slovenia and a few others.

So looking at Malta you find similar problems like being highly dependent on building and property with a major supply of unsold/unused appartments and even more planned or being built. Bank situation is rather unclear and overexposed to the property market. State budget is also unclear as many debt issues (Enemalta, Airmalta, new Parliament building are all not included in debt figures) and the new government is already hinting that the proposed deficit figures will be missed.

So how much better is the position of Malta when compared to other wobly states? I'm getting to a point where I don't trust any figures or statements by banks,governments and even the EU. Looking at Cyprus it is obvious that you cannot rely on anything being safe any more!

One of the next means Spain,Italy,France,Malta and a few others. I can only guess who will be next but the whole Euro and debt issue is not finished.

A former Chief-Economist of the Deutsche Bank published this list of relative susceptibility for a financial cris amongst Euro countries today:



I'm sorry it is in German but the graph is self-explaining.

They see the France and Malta as the countries with the highest risk.

It is interesting that all countries that are already in trouble are at the top of the list. France seems to have escaped so far and Malta is the next candidate.

Have to say, I disagree. Recently had a pretty hard look at Malta's economic situation as I'm moving over soon and wanted to check whether it was a safe bet or not. From what I can tell, Malta's one of the few places in the EU that's actually doing pretty well.

- Malta's had consistent economic growth (GDP rising 3% last year, or something like that I think; as compared to all the other bailout countries which have been decreasing for a few years at least);
- There's a solid financial base for employment and investment - in a large part thanks to the igaming industry which has created a pool of talent in the IT sector, making it attractive for non-igaming companies to take advantage of the lower costs;
- The IMF have concluded that Malta is basically doing pretty well compared to the rest of the EU, given the situation (see for the report; my summary is incredibly simplistic)

No country is immune, Malta included. And there are certainly more unpleasant surprises waiting for us with regards to the EU economic situation. But based on what I can find out, Malta isn't doing too badly.

This is of course a complete layman's view of things and I could very well be utterly wrong!

I am sorry for the off topic, but @ Mike, you could try to show more respect ....at least the person was trying to write in English.

I bet that the only language you know is your mother tongue, which pretty explains your intolerance. A person who tried to learn another language would not react as same as you did.

P.S. And you could keep your thoughts and opinion about my English, I know that is not perfect but at least I am trying...

whilst I agree with much of that, the igaming sector could vanish from Malta very easily - its mainly in Malta due to tax advantages and may not last.

Malta has a massive property bubble - if it bursts it will have massive problems.

absolutely - this island is heavily reliant on finance igaming and tourism - the property situation is one of the factors that will bring about its demise if theyre not so much more careful from now on - too many people with cash tied up in empty properties and no REAL money...buildings used as capital to borrrow more and build more properties with no or little chance of selling them....more empty lumps of concrete and block.......

Regarding the property - there is a quite 'strange' bubble, to be honest. Yes, there are a lot of empty property, but try to find something in a good or average quality - it's almost impossible.

I was trying to find 2-3 bedroom apartment in Msida/Gzira area, was watching around 70 (!) apartments in quite small area. It's either new bullshit (built in a hurry) or old bullshit (built 20-30 years ago).

They have a lot of empty apartments, but there is nothing to choose from

in other words dead money - not worth a lot..... no fluid cash - an old mate of mine once told me "cash is king profit is opinion"..how true.... balance sheets mean nothing..

No it isn't......had you read previous posts (particularly about the 'Romance' languages) you would know that.  I am not an intolerant person - I just don't suffer fools gladly.

And you could keep your thoughts and opinion about my English, I know that is not perfect but at least I am trying...

I have never opined or commented on your command of, what is obviously not, your mother tongue........

I know you are 'trying'............the object, I believe, here is to help those who genuinely want help and information about anything Malta related and to develop a 'community' atmosphere where participants can 'banter'....(my apologies for using English jargon) as well as provide that information.

am lucky really as i struggle to only speak geordie never mind english.......and trying to learn maltese..... every little helps. but my accent altho not strong now...its still throws the locals...
