Self-employment - urgently needed registration - how long?

VerticalShot

Hi everyone,

I got a good job offer by the local university and accepted it with pleasure.

Being Bulgarian, till the end of this year I still need a work permit - not so easy to get one and I was told by an insider that the ETC staff were told to turn down all applications by Romanians and Bulgarians. Since after this year we won't need the permits to work here, they are trying to discourage as many people as possible - how nice :)

So I need to apply for self employment ASAP as the first term is about to start in two weeks - can someone who went through this registration lately advise me on the following:

- how long after you applied you could start working?

- what documents apart from the ETC declaration did they want?

- how did you get a NI 3 form and was it a fast process?

And actually, when do you start paying taxes? I got a bit puzzled as they say that you need not to pay taxes on the first 8500 eur, but then you need to pay taxes on the 21st of December anyway, hm?

Any general tips on that would be much appreciated too!

Thanks a lot,
Vlad

Hi Vlad,

you have to send the self-employment form to ETC or go there in person. Read this link that governs self-employment:

Once you have informed ETC you can start work right away.

To register for NI you go to your local health insurance office and get a NI number. As self-employed you pay NI contributions 3 times a year online or at the tax office in Floriana.

Thanks a lot, Ricky! Really well written.

Do you know if you need to apply for a VAT number from the very beginning?

I heard different opinions on that matter, but couldn't find the right document to read.

Best,
Vlad

Hi Vlad,

you can get a VAT number from the VAT office in Birkirkara. You just go there.

Do you need a VAT number? Not all jobs require one. Teaching languages ,for example, does not require you to pay VAT.

If you have to charge VAT for your business then you have to do it from the beginning although there is the Article 11 procedure if you stay under certain thresholds during the first 3 years. Check it out if it applies to you.

The office in Birkirkara are very cooperative and will tell you what to do.

Cheers
Ricky
