Sicily day excursion

hammersfan

Hi,

We're considering a day trip to Sicily - does anyone have experience of the Day Excursions by hydrofoil then coach to Mt Etna etc. It's along day and we usually prefer to do things at our own pace and now we live here we don't want to be too "touristy", but maybe it's a good way to take in Sicily without the hassle of driving etc...Please let me know your thoughts...at this point we're only considering a day trip, later on we'll likely go over for a long weekend or something.

Thanks in advance
Tim

Hi Tim,

We went on the Mt. Aetna day excursion a few years ago because we were interested in seeing the volcano. It was a long day and you have to pay a lot extra if you want to take the cable car and the jeep up to the crater zone but it is really interesting.
But most of the day is spent in the bus !
But it was a great experience. It is also nice to upgrade on the Maria Dolores.

i agree with ricky that a day is very tiring..  and most of the day is spent on the bus, but it is a great experience.  However, personally, i don't like these tiring day trips..

you should consider ryan air.. last novemeber i went to sicily and back for Zero euro :)  to trapani.. it was wonderful.. spent five days there.. it's far from mount etna, but there is so much to see in the area..

Thanks to Ricky and Daisy for their replies. We've had input from other people we know on the island and it's ended up pretty evenly split!

Part of the reason for going is to experience the hydrofoil (my kids would get a kick out of it) - so Ryanair wouldn't help on that front for this trip, maybe another later in the year though, so thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Tim,

To be technically exact the Maria Dolores is not a hydrofoil but a large catamaran ferry capable of a speed of 36 knots .It really is something to experience , especially if you travel club class.
