Sliema is a very busy town.  Being at the centre of the island and host of lots of offices and shops, no wonder it is too hectic.  So unless you love the city environment, Sliema will not be the town to live in. Saying this however, most of the people who live in Sliema would disagree with me since you have everything on the doorstep.  Especially if you need to travel by public transport it is one of the best places to be in Malta.

I agree with Terry i.e. Mellieha is very nice, by the sea, good schools.  However it is at the northern part of the island and having lived there myself, it is a bit too far away from every other town in Malta, especially if you don't have your own transport and need to rely on the public transport.  Same goes with Xemxija and St. Paul's Bay, the latter is however a bit more reachable.  But if you have your own transport, remember on good days with not so much traffic it only takes you around 45mins to cross the island so nowhere in Malta is too far away.

To give you an idea, from Sliema to St Paul's Bay it takes me around 20 to 30mins by car.  When i had to use the public transport it took me around 50mins.  So you need to consider these factors also if you need to find a work here in Malta.  Should you not mind to wake up a bit earlier for work, than you have no problem in living in Mellieha, however if you prefer to stay late in bed, than unless you are working very close to home, you might find Mellieha to St.  Paul's Bay a bit too far away.

Thank you for your reply, I found Sliema very hectic when I was there, I have never been a City Girl we live in a little Village near Skegness in Lincolnshire at the moment, but saying that I wouldn't want anywhere as quiet as our little Village is, but because we have a young son nothing too lively,.

I love that Malta is a small Island, we probably will buy a car once there as it's another advantage that the driving is pretty much the same as the Uk if my memory serves me correct even the signs are the same, thank you for you advice on the areas, I will certainly be looking into them, I can't believe how right Malta feels for us, a bit of a hidden Gem I think.

So if we were to look for work you say St Pauls Bay and Sliema is really where we would be looking, so would it make sense for us to maybe look for Property in St Paul's Bay?

We have savings but they won't last forever, so I think one of us will have to work, as we have a small son and will be trying again soon for another, my Husband is a Maintenance Man/Labourer in the Uk he has extensive experience, and I am a Sales Manager, I think it would be very easy for me to work out there as I know Malta has lots of sales opportunities due to big Companies moving to Malta, but I am a little unsettled leaving my little boy, but we can't be picky in this Economy so   I am sure we will find a solution that will work for us

Since you will have a car I would definitely look at Mellieha, Xemxija and St. Paul's Bay.  From experience I tell you that I enjoyed living in these three towns and having a car makes it so much easier to reach everything and everyone.

In Malta there are no real areas where to look for jobs.  if you would be looking for a sales manager than most probably is that you will be having a company car or use own car but having car allowance and be driving all over Malta, but this depends also on which sector you are working in.  As for your husband's work in maintenance he could be working anywhere.  What you need to look at is applying for jobs as you will not be able to just focus on finding a job in the twon you live
