Holding back a year at school

EmilyQ

Hi
Has anyone held their child back at school? My daughter was born in December and so is due to start kindergarten in October at 2 yrs and 10 months, but I'm wondering if it's best / possible to hold her back to the year below so that she would fit in with the UK system (which has children from September - August in the same school year rather than January - December).
Any advice would be appreciated :-)

Hi, my daughter was 2 years 9 months when she started, which is the earliest they can start. It is not compulsory to start them at all. Ask them if she can go in the New Year intake if you are concerned, I think that way, they do 3 years in Kinder. I know a friends daughter has done that.

It is possible to repeat a year and it's quite normal to do so in Malta, if the child is struggling. However, I'm not sure if that has to be on the teacher's recommendation only. Phone up the education department to find out. If you are going back to the UK for sure, maybe they will sort it for you. If you are staying, then it seems silly to not just go with the flow.
