Living in Mellieha with Kids

Kat33

We're moving to Malta (again) next month and after previously living in Sliema, we're looking at perhaps moving up to Mellieha. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it's like up there for families?

I have a 3 year old son, who I would either be looking at putting into the local primary schools kindergarden or paying for a private nursery. I have seen the primary school teaches mostly in English, is that the same in the kindergarden?

My 13 year old daughter will also need to be enrolled at a local high school. Is Mosta the nearest state school? Any ideas what it's like there and if they teach mainly in English (I know religion, Maltese - obviously, and often history are taught in Maltese in most state secondary schools)? I do obviously want the kids to learn Maltese, however as my daughter has had to learn Spanish just to be able to take part in lessons at her present school I think she needs a bit of a break to get to grips with a new curriculum before learning yet another new language.

Alternatively the nearest private schools with school transport (or on a local bus route) to Mellieha and any opinions on them? (I've looked at Newark in Gzira, St Anton has no vacancies, San Andrea (I think that one does transport to Mellieha) and St Catherine's (not sure on that one). I've emailed St Michaels Foundation and Chiswick too for some info.

Is there anything going on in Mellieha for kids? I saw there was a local scout group, as well as a football club for little ones, plus possibly a youth group?

Any tips on the area (where to live/avoid etc) would be really appreciated. Or perhaps you'd recommend living in another area entirely?

Thanks

Hi,
we too are moving to Malta in August and have a 13 year old daughter. We will live in a nice quite area in St. Gwann and our children are enrolled in Verdala School. I was wondering if you have any information about sport activities for teens, such as gymnastics, tennis, martial art, ballet, horse riding/stables. My daughter would also love to meet girls her age, as we do not know yet if there are any in our new neighborhood... BR, Ulrike

Hiya,
Sorry I'm not going to be of much help on the schools front, the only one I know of is Bels in St Paul's Bay, not sure if its private or not, but my other half's boss sends her kids there and they settled in well and are enjoying it. Maybe worth a look as it'll be 10 ish mins from you depending where in Mellieha you were.

My little girl is 2 and we live in St Paul's Bay, near Xemxija.

Mellieha may have more going on than where we are, it's very quiet here which is perfect for us but I'm sure as she gets older we'll need more things to do.  We're only 5 mins from Mellieha though so not far away if you end up that way :)
