From my experience you will need to produce a tenancy agreement for both.. My lease is 12 months but I do not know whether a 6 month tenancy is long enough.  Most banks in Malta will write to your bank for a reference and that can take 2/3 weeks.

Good luck.  The process for ID will involve visits to St Lukes Hospital and the Evans Building in Valletta opposite Malta Experience.  Would suggest you visit a bank like HSBC and ask them what they will need.  You will receive an e-mail with their requirements.

thanks howard so it looks as if I will have to sign up to a tenancy agreement first. am not planning to move out until next feb. looking at st pauls area. will look at the hsbc route. many thanks

I think nobody will provide a rent contact for less then 12 months and to open a bank account and apply for Maltese id requires to bring both rent and working contract.
No need to go to any hospital though.
And HSBC didn't have to write to my bank as far as I know.

You only need to go to St Luke's hospital if you require a section 21 notice - your not working over 60/65 etc
If your working you will need to get a social security number for e residence card
If your self sufficient you will require full medical insurance

Also just to clarify its an e-residence card and NOT an ID card  please read the sticky thread titled e-residence to find the latest requirements when applying

I live in St Pauls  where a lot of °µÍø½ûÇøs live.  You probably should do what I did was to stay in cheap hotel until you find somewhere.  Rentals are higher during summer but come down during the winter.  Try to avoid agents as they will charge you plus they receive a commission from the landlord.  If you find direct you can negotiate a better deal.  Best sources are Malta Park web site and Malta Sunday Times.

the norm is 12months, but you can get a 6 months contracts - very few will do three months - 6months contracts in Malta are regarded as long term.
