MOVING IN NOVEMBER

amy0212

Re: Cost of living in Malta – 2015
Hello everyone! Ive joined this blog just today. Really thankful that there's such a blog and such nice people ready to help eachother.
We will be moving to Malta in November. There are 2 of us me and my hubby and our Kitty. The adress of the place my hubby is going to work is something like Mriehel Bypass Birkirkara

So guys i have a question.
Actually couple of questions.

1. What is the weather like in november?
2. How much does it cost to rent a small 1 bedroom apartment? Do flats usually come furnished? We are not planning to spend more than 300EUR. Is it actually possible? From what ive read above it souds as a reasonable price. I would really be thankful if anyone could actually provide me with some contacts of landlords or offices dealing with rent and so on.
3. Any advises on how to use public transportation? as we do not drive. We love riding bycicles. Is it possible and common to ride a bike to work?
4. Grocceries? Food ? I'm planning to cook at home? So i would aprecciate advices on cheap grocceries stores and some Bazaars maybe if there are any?
5.Utilities? Electricity? Water? Is tap water drinkable ? Internet? Phone?
6. My husband already got a job offer. I havent got any but i would like to look for a job over there ? Is it hard to find a job? I have a Bachelor Diploma in Accounting and Audit. Know some languages etc. Just would like to know  the procedures for job applicants etc.

Thankssss in advance for your help )

1.cooler than the summer -high chance of thunderstorms but not as wet as the UK
2.anything from about €150 depending on location (Gozo is cheaper)  but  for Malta you can get a two bed apartment for about 400 - it is a lot easier to find apartments in November though - the only issue you may face is the cat  but if you speak to the spca  Malta they sometimes have a list of pet friendly landlords
3 sign up now for the card you can use your passport and they will deliver it to you at your home if you wish - it will make bus tickets 75cts compared to 2€ on bus -  public transport is easy to use but is very busy - people do ride bikes but not really to get anywhere more as a hobby
4 check out lidl , miracle foods and the local fruit and vegetable vans - get to know them and you'll get better prices
5 electricity and water are billed - gas is via canisters tap water is safe in some residential places but it often has a funny taste - depends what your used to drinking but bottled water is cheap and most use that .  Internet is via go , melita or Vodafone  an you should expect to pay between 20-40 euros a month for a reasonable speed unlimited usuage.  Phone - get a pay and go GO mobile sim for the best deals and also because you get 10€ free credit

6 - finding a job depend on the time of year and your skill set - register with the or use Malta park - you may also find jobs in the classifieds

7 read all the stickies and any other questions please feel free to ask

hi I have just logged in today as well & my family & I r thinking of moving to malta next year so im needing answer as well - we r thinking of renting wen we get there but want to buy wen the time is right..... I really want to know living expenses.... how much a month to live in malta without struggling..... hope to get answers as well - I hope all goes well with your move.

I would put off plans to buy for the time being purely because there are greater restrictions on non EU residents when it comes to buying

However average living costs for two people are about 1200 - this includes rent , bills , bus travel phones , Internet food and other bits  we have lived on less but we don't have a bad life at all
As a family it all depend on how many are in your family - your needs ( schooling etc ) if you drive - where on the island your intending to live and your culinary abilities etc

Really reccomend you search for the cost of living in Malta thread and read that - then if you have any direct questions please feel free to ask ;)

Thanks my husband is a citizen of malta so that aspect should be ok. Main concern is how much we could earn. Heard the average pay there is 12,000 per year. My husband is a manager in Australia and hoping to secure a management role in malta for more than 12k pa. We have 4 young kids. I will search the cost of living in malta post thank you

robpw2

Yes my husbands a manager in It and earns about 19k a year so - you should be able to find something
It depends on the field though

salibaklan

We have alot of thinking to do

mdillyd

i have to ask you this...but why would you want to come live in malta when you live in Australia and the standard of living is probably better....certainly your roads are better than the tracks we call roads over here

mdillyd

one of the things you MUST get done if you are renting is to get your landlord to sign Form H for you otherwise you can be paying up to 60% more for your water and electricity

amy0212

form H ? what is that ?

Officially ARMS say this can now be done without the landlords signature although you may upset the landlord in doing so.

Being also a relocated Aussie, have to ask you why so negative?  What expectations didn't Malta meet?

November will be much milder than  UK, there will be rain and wind some of the time and evenings can be cold if there is wind chill, but you can also sit on the beach in a bikini and its 25C  :)  so mixed is the answer!

Yes you should get a one bed for €300, near the work address should be no problem, and yes they come furnished. To find somewhere, use estate agents, MaltaPark website , Malta Times newspaper, word of mouth, Facebook property groups or walk the streets and look for ads in windows. If you use an agent there is a fee, watch for people contacting you offering to help who will ultimately charge you. If you don't want to pay fee you will need to find something yourself, so register with all the FB groups you can find, and look for private ads. Its often easier to use agents first time around though.
Many people come here for a few days 3-4 weeks before moving to find a flat.

Rob has already answered re buses plenty in Birkirkara area, it is possible but not advisable to ride bike to work!

Tap water is drinkable, but not always palatable

With your qualifications you should get a job, may take you  little time. there are agencies etc you can tap into, plus usual newspapers, online ads etc and again Facebook,

Plenty to keep you busy! ;-)

My understanding is that the talinja card is only available with a Maltese passport.  Am I wrong?

robpw2

your wrong - you can sign up for the tallinja card with any passport

scubaboy

you do not need a Maltese Passport for talinja card. Even tourists can order one

InNeedOfChange

Yeah we live in Ireland and order talinja cards for our holiday, it was a bit of a faff because we kept getting error messages when we tried to apply. In the end customer service was really helpful and we got them in the post in about ten days I think.
