our children will begin in january. I think it is ok but if they have place of course. How old is your child and wich school do you choose?

Hi Julia, We haven't picked a school yet but thinking of St. Paul's Bay as would a school with more °µÍø½ûÇøs and English. My daughters are 5 yrs and 10 yrs and want to make the move as easy as possible for them.  Where will your children go?  do u have place already?  have u visited Malta?  So many things to think about when moving.

Hi, yes we have visited Malta and we are looking for a townhouse or an apoartment in Sliema. The choise for the school is Chiswick or Verdala for the youngest( 9 year) and while we are moving in January it seems that only Qsi has a place for our 11 year old. Qsi is very expensive and a little bit far away.
But my dilemma is if my youngest who speaks italian and swedish can be enrolled i one class of 24 pupills that speak good english. She is just beginning with english.
We are in waitinglist at the school. When are you moving?

Hi, yes I am from Scotland and English is their first language. We think to move mid October, to look house etc.  probably in north of island.  Why did u decide to live Malta?

Once you choose your location and get a house/apartment the government schools must provide your child with a place and there is never usually any problems once you have all the paper work.. For Private Schools, its different.. They will tell you they have a waiting list for most years and they have bigger classes also. They will ask for a signing on fee to secure your place so just be sure you make the best choice for both you and your CHILD... Its them that has to go everyday not us...

I thought i would step in with a note of caution.  My children go to St Pauls Bay school which is marvellous for ex-pat kids but it is extremely packed with over 1000 kids attending a school meant for half this number.

I would strongly advise you speak to the school before committing to accommodation in the area as they may be full and I have friends who were refused admission part way through the year at this school last year.

My kids start St Pauls next week. Their cousins have been going there for the last 3 years and comes highly recommended for °µÍø½ûÇøs. Very English friendly but as said before it is a large school with almost 1000 kids. St Pauls is a lovely area for families, not as busy with tourists as Buggiba or qawra but still within touching distance. Great °µÍø½ûÇø community. My kids are 5 and 8. Mine went to summer school which was in the school and settled very quickly so hoping for the same in once school proper begins

I would agree with all you said in your post, this is a great area for families and after getting used to the quirks of the way maltese schools work we have been very happy with the way our daughters first year has gone.

Maybe I'll see you on the school run,  our daughter is also 8 so may even be in the same class.

Thanks for the info I will definitely make sure first.  We already visited the school in May and yes one of the things I noticed was the amount of kids.  Does this reflect in the quality of teaching with so many kids in the class?  I am still nervous about the move for the kids especially the language.  Which subjects are taught in Maltese and which English?  Was this a problem for your kids?  I also thought St.Pauls Bay village seemed very quiet although only there for a visit.  Is there much going on, I imagine there must be as so many kids in the school but seemed pretty dead!
