Noise in Malta : where is it most quiet?

andy5m

Are there still any quiet pockets on Malta Island (not Gozo)?
Not so noisy, fewer cars?

Are Manikata or Imgarr worth considering  for  a quiet life?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Siggiewi is lovely. People call it Gozo on Malta and it’s quite central. We are very happy to have moved there to avoid the noise

thanks, Volcane.

I`ll be visiting in  March, and I`ll be sure to check it out.

I'd say that it depends more on "where"in a certain village you live than on the village itself. There are quiet places in Mellieha, for example, but if you live close to the main road, it's not quiet at all.

With Manikata, the problem can be all the cars driving through to avoid the congestion on the road from Mellieha to Xemxija when the Gozo ferry brings everyone back, particularly on Sunday evenings. Or to a lesser extent the cars going from Mellieha to Golden Bay or generally going south through Mgarr.

In Mgarr I'd say it depends on where you are, but it's generally not so noisy. You get all the cars going through Mgarr to Gnejna bay, though.

I've heard Rabat is quieter. Maybe also worth looking at places in the south, Zurrieq or - as volcane has mentioned - Siggiewi.

Hope that helps.

Mdina ?

andy5m

Thanks for the information, Bernie

I hadn`t read much about Rabat for living on this forum;
I only guess that there  may be a lot of tourist groups visiting,
or tour buses trundling through for Mdina.

I'd say the tourists and tour buses are mainly found near the Mdina gate, and maybe round the parish church and up to the catacombs, but the rest of the town is rather quiet. The road to Dingli is a bit busy maybe, but nothing compared to other main streets (such as the main street through Mellieha, which is always congested...)

A friend of mine also told me Rabat is not so overpriced as far as rent is concerned.

Interesting information again, Bernie.

I wonder how many °µÍø½ûÇøs live in Rabat; it  seem pretty good,
based upon what you`ve said. I have a baby daughter,
so the local primary school matters. Wonder how much English is used in classes.

Wandered round Rabat many times and thought this place is dead.

Thanks, Ray.

I suppose some love the quiet; others get bored

Manikata is a horror during summer weekends.

If you are looking for a truly quiet spot you have to go to Bahrija.  :top:
Except for construction works (every now and then) and hunters (during specific months), it's a very quiet spot during the day, since most people are off to work. And during the night it's also very quiet due to the very limited choice of pubs/restaurants.  :sleep

The newly erected outskirts of Dingli are also nice to live in, bit more life than Bahrija, but also better infrastructure.  :D

Bidnija is another quiet area, or at least it was a nice place - there's a lot going on right now  :(

Thanks for the good ideas, Matm.
I hadn`t read about the areas you mention,
so I`ll get researching.

Best wishes,
Andy

Andy, in Malta it's not possible to have both, a vivid urban area and a quiet flat/balkony. So, either you accept some noise, pollution and other nuisance ... or you move to a quiet remote spot. There's a nice place with good views when you go from the roundabout in front of Mellieha to Selmun. Last time I saw two "to let"-signs. Selmun is a Natura2000 reserve, so no hunting is allowed. Same as large areas around Bahrija.

I`ll opt for the quiet areas, I think.
It`s all a balance in the end, but a quiet night`s sleep is essential.
