Killing tourists on Maltese roads because of drunken driving

georgeingozo

A quick flick through the old articles on Times online, and I can't spot anything about drunk driving

georgeingozo

I think you are mixing up this case and the one mentioned in the original post

ricky

Sorry ,

you are right George. You are even more exact than I normally are -))) My German worklife ...........

The accused only went out to eat at a restaurant and did not drink any alcohol.

That makes the case much more straight forward. Now they don't even have to drop that charge.

georgeingozo

it was an easy assumption to make given the circumstances

ricky

True,

when I go out to restaurant I do drink a few beers .....but I don't drive then.

So I presume that is the general case here in Malta that people driving home don't drink.

This morning, I took a look at my window and I've seen two times, a car driving in the wrong direction up one-way street.
I could see a car parked at the middle right side of the highway to change a tire. Another car who showed the turn signal with a hand not with the lamp and twice.
I can't say all the drivers are dangerous in Malta but definitely I have never seen in my all life elsewhere than in Malta a bus who didn't stop when I crossed a pedestrian crossing in the touristic plaza shopping center street in Sliema, and then I had to run and my girlfriend had to stop before me otherwise , I could imagine the worst.
Regarding previous comments, I prefer a Ricky cynical about Maltese drivers than to have foreigners dead on the island.

I saw even worse in Sicily, esp in Palermo and Catania - pedestrian crossings there reminded me of Frogger

once again george i find my self agreeing with you - about catania as we were there for four days a year go and its just plain crazy....

Alf007

Well, Catania by far is worse than Malta, but Malta is terrible! and this is a Latin American speaking :)

Now is the beginning of Summer... Pedestrians, be Careful of Drivers!!! Drivers, be careful of Pedestrians!!!

I was stuck on the bus for an hour on Tower Road on Thursday due to an accident, then we eventually got moving an before we got to Portomaso our bus hit the back of a car. I then had to stand at the front of the replacement bus and it was a frightening experience with cars overtaking on blind bends round about Bahar-ic-Cagnac (sp) etc.

Scary stuff.
