Becoming a psychotherapist in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch

bnroncaglia

HI! My goal is to get a Master's degree in the Netherlands, then qualify as a psychologist via completion of the GZ-opleiding programme, and finally train to become a psychotherapist at one of Netherlands' psychotherapy institutes. I was wondering whether some of you have taken this path I want to embark on and done so successfully, without speaking a word of the Dutch language. It is my understanding that the GZ-opleiding programme can be taken in English (correct me if I'm wrong), but how about psychotherapy training, do I have the option of doing this in English too?

Thank you so much for your time!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The hurdle to get over is your BIG registration (); I just went through the advice wizard and it basically says if you do your professional training in the Netherlands, you do not need to prove you can speak Dutch; however, when I consider how strict they are about the Dutch language requirement, I think the course in the Netherlands must be in Dutch; my advice would be to speak to the University and ask them if you can do it in English.

I hope this helps.
