Short term employment in Portugal

East of the Sun

Hello,

My name is Theodore and I am an American. I worked at a vineyard in Napa and the manager of the vineyard (family friend) would like me to gain experience by working at vineyards (for 30-60 days) where she has contacts at vineyards in Portugal, (as well as Spain, France, and Italy). My work would be in the hospitality side of the vineyard operation. I have been researching short-term employment in Portugal and it seems that even though US citizens do not need a visa for visiting Portugal (Schengen Area) following the 90/180 rule; I would need to follow Portugal's visa requirement for employment.

My question is that for my situation, I think I could possibly have 2 options:

  1. Since I will be employed for less than 90 days, I will need a short-stay visa?  OR
  2. Since I graduate with my bachelor's degree in August, I could qualify for a Youth Mobility visa since I would be a recent graduate and working for less than 6 months.

I'm hoping to receive some advice on the the proper visa and process for an American working in Portugal for 30-60 days. Thank you.

Hi East of the Sun, Welcome.

If you are a US citizen and want to visit Portugal as a tourist or for a business trip, then you do not need to apply for a visa. You can stay in Portugal for a maximum of 90 days within a six-month period (all trips to Portugal and the Schengen Area combined).

For students, this period is extended to 12 months.

As to whether a student visa is suitable for you, you should check it with a Portuguese consulate.
