@Alp64 Don't you have to use VFS Global? I am not familiar with Canadá process but everywhere else, we did our application via VFS....not directly with the Consulate...

@mariacmorenovarela thanks for the reply, just checked their website - . Portugal is not on the list of countries I can apply to from VFS Canada.

VFS Global is an outsourcing of visa services. It may not be applicable in all countries.

@JohnnyPT thanks for the link - I checked it before posting my questions. I'm looking for more specific information about Canadian consulates. Looks like not a lot of people went through this process yet. I will post an update if/when I get through the application myself

To answer my own question(perhaps, it will help other people applying for the same visa) - once you fill out the application online and click "Submit", the next page will display a calendar to pick up the interview date and time. Appointments are released every month. Approximate waiting time for the appointment is 1-2 months, but it depends on each consulate.

The system doesn't show any availability?

Appointments are released once a month for the next month(e.g. in August I had an option to book an appointment in September only). Just keep checking the website - I read online that people spend 3-5 months before they can book an appointment.

Did you collect all the documents and only then applied and picked the interview date?

Or is it possible to apply first, and continue collecting the docs for the interview date?

For example, buying the travel insurance - how can i predict for which timeframe I should buy it if I don't know the interview date and long the processing will take?

I prepared all the documents before the online application. You have to fill out the application and then attach scanned documents on the last page of the form before you can access a calendar to book the interview date. I don't know if you can send an incomplete application and whether it's going to be rejected or not. I did not want to "gamble" and simply picked a starting date 2 months ahead. At this point, I know that even if my application is approved I won't be able to arrive in Portugal in time. Based on my experience it's better to get the insurance with a starting date at least 3 months from the application date - 60 calendar days for processing + 1 month for booking.

I signed up with this insurance company to get travel health insurance ([link moderated]/), it's a monthly subscription, but you can change your starting date (before it starts) if things get delayed.

And then you should be able to stop the subscription when you get your Portuguese resident health benefits or something...

I'll keep you posted with how it goes.

Thanks Alp64, I was able to get an appointment for November!

I checked on Oct 2 (first business day of the month) between 8am-11am and I got an appointment for November! 

(I also checked on Oct 1 (sunday) (12:01 am-1:00 am), but nothing was open, so it looks like someone manually releases the appointments when they come into work )
