Does the government track all assets in Portugal

canadaportugalvisa22

Been on this journey of trying to settle my father's estate. The last remaining piece is he told us he held a GIC but his bank is saying there is no record of it. As far as we know, he had no other accounts at other banks and we have no paperwork of its existence.

On the one hand, it just might not exist. On the other, we'd like to try every avenue of figuring out if it does.

Does the government track financial assets or have a way to do a database search to see if this exists at another bank./financial institution? If not, we're left with just visiting every bank we can think of but would like to put off the wild goose chase if possible.

Try the Bank of Portugal, for information on deposits and credit liabilities records in banks in Portugal (read point 8. How do I obtain information on the accounts of a deceased holder?)

You can also ask the IGCP (Instituto de gestão de crédito publico) for information records, it's likely that your father had savings certificates (certificados de aforro / certificados do tesouro) = GIC
