Hi Larry, Welcome.

Medicines can be prescribed by any doctor in the private or public service after analysing your medical history, past and present medical exams, analyses, etc. If you are a tax resident and have access to the national health system, you can have part of the cost reimbursed.

You can search for the medicine on this link (use the active substance field) and find out the price and packaging/dosage form:

If you are not registered with the family doctor in the health centre (centro da saúde) where you live here in portugal then you do not have portuguese prescription of the drugs (receita médica) in this case you can buy your drugs from the pharmacy but they will ask you to show them the american prescription but this way the price will be higher. If you are registered with the centro da saúde the doctor will give you (either personally hand you or send you via email or paperless receita via sms) and then you go to the pharmacy and buy your drugs using this receita and this way the drugs price is way way cheaper, sometimes it costs zero for chronic drugs like those for diabetes and it includes the insulin pens and the strips for measuring the glucose level.
