Job Opportunities for English-Speaking Students in Portugal?

Study Guy

Hi everyone,

I am planning to move to Portugal for my Master's studies and was wondering about the types of jobs available for English-speaking students. Since I am not fluent in Portuguese yet, I would love to know what kind of part-time or freelance work I can do while studying.

  1. Are there common jobs for international students who only speak English?
  2. Which cities offer the best opportunities for student work?
  3. Are there any remote jobs or online work options for students in Portugal?
  4. What are the legal work restrictions for international students?

If you have any personal experiences or know someone who has worked in Portugal as a student, I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Portuguese students often work in supermarkets, shops, cafes and restaurants because these sectors can offer part-time shift work that best suits their studies. Most students work some evenings and all day at weekends totalling up to 20 hours per week.

There are many jobs in the larger cities but most employers prefer portuguese speakers and there are many Brazilians and Africans who already speak portuguese so you may find it difficult to get a job.

Please note that the entry salary will be the minimum wage, currently 870 Euros per month for a full-time job of 8 hours per day = 40 hours per week. This salary is not enough to rent a room, plus living costs.

If you work part-time you'll be earning less than 870 Euros.

I'm not aware of any restrictions, but you must fullfill all the visa requirements for a student visa, and same requirements for renewing it later.

If you contact the portuguese University you are planning to attend, they'll be able to offer advice and support.

First of all, do you have a visa?

What kind of accommodation do you expect to have to get your visa approved?

Are you willing to live in one room / share a house?

Which university are you going to do your Master's studies ? In which city?

What do you mean by having a ‘good job’?

What are your qualifications? Do you think you can get a good job with a part-time career?

If you don't make yourself stand out from the rest, what makes a ‘good company’ choose you over another candidate?...

It seems to me that there are more questions than answers...

What University are you planning to attend?

The University  will be able to help you with visa information, accommodation, moving & settling into student life.

There are no good jobs in Portugal, most jobs pay very low salaries, and portuguese workers are leaving the country to work in other countries where salaries are higher.

If you are coming to Portugal to study, you need to get your student visa first, and you must show you are bringing enough money to pay your studies and cover your living costs.

You cannot rely on jobs in Portugal to cover expenses while studying because it won't be enough.
