Starting to Explore Retirement Opportunities in Portugal

amlgonzalez

Hi all.

We are Amanda and William, currently residing in South Carolina, USA. Originally from Colombia, South America, we have also spent time living in Chile. Our passion for travel has inspired us as we plan to retire in approximately two years, with Spain and Portugal as our primary destinations of interest.

We intend to embark on an exploratory trip to Portugal and Spain soon to familiarize ourselves with the regions and identify potential cities or towns where we might like to settle.

We are eager to exchange information and insights related to our plans with like-minded individuals.

Hi Amanda and William, I'm Jennifer. We know the Algarve like the back of our hand so if you give us some more information as to what you are looking for in an area, we can help you with this. ***

To be a bit more generic, and to give you some food for thought to get you started:

Lisbon has a very good connection to numerous US states, so could be a good idea to fly into Lisbon. Lisbon is far too hilly to spend more than long weekend, nevermind retirement, however you can get the train to Cascais and explore this area.  I however would suggest hiring a car and coming down towards the Algarve, stopping at Alcacer do Sal, and perhaps hopping across to Evora before making your way down the Toll roads to the Algarve, where you can go West and explore fisherman villages like Salema, Burgau or drop-in at Albufeira and look at places like Guia or Vilamoura or Loule. From here you could come over to the East Algarve (stopping at Tavira - an excellent choice for retirement), and eventually carrying on into Spain. You can stop in Ayomonte, then from here go down to Tarifa, moving back up to Sotogrande then Estepona Old Town, (if you like a mountain feel, then Benahavis is beautiful and the restaurants are to die for!). You can then fly back out to the US from Malaga or Madrid.

I hope this has been helpful though to get you started smile.png

Olá Amanda and William! That's exciting you've narrowed it down to Spain and Portugal, both wonderful countries. My husband and I moved here five years ago, and before that has spent a few years in Madrid. For us, we chose our region (on the upper part of Alentejo Central) based on a lot of data crunching, and then when we arrived we drove around exploring the region more carefully. For us, we were able to cross off regions from our list based on rainfall (we like it dry), temperature (we like it hot), wildfire risk (avoiding large eucalyptus and pine forests, plus steep hills/mountains), water resources and air quality (lots of groundwater, clean air), distance to airports/good motorway infrastructure, ease of learning Portuguese (i.e. avoiding very touristy areas, like Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve, where people often speak incredible English), and lots of horses. Basically, we wanted to avoid falling in love with an area, that we would then have to say no to because it didn't meet some core requirements!

We always recommend this approach to our tenants (people normally rent a flat from us to use as a base, while they look for a place to buy/get to know the area), as everyone has different criteria. You are in the really fun stage, of dreaming and exploring - enjoy!
