Buying land in Portugal with a barn...

We are considering a small piece of Agro-Forest land in Portugal. It has a barn construction built by previous owner but without planning. Would we be able to develop this barn further or asked to take it down? tia

From what I have read on other forums, if it was built without planning then it was illegally built and yes when they find out they will most likely ask you to take it down . It really depends on the sort of structure you're talking about. As lcosta72 mentioned, ou might want to schedule a meeting in your city council to understand any existing building constraints.

Hi,
A classic in Portugal. 8 months ago, when looking for buying a house, we were presented many houses with an "illegal status", namely smming pool, or garden walls, or additional room without permit. In addition there are all the so-called "off-shore houses" whose owner is an off-shore company.
We were very, very, very strongly discouraged by our professional real estate agent to buy such properties.
It looks your barn is not in a legal situation. I would demolish it and reconstruct something new with a permit. (before demolishing, make sure the barn is not protected by a specific status like an historic monument or so)
