Payment methods in Portugal

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Once youÂ’re settled in Portugal, you will need to make some basic purchases, like groceries or pay bills. Hence, it is essential to know the payment methods available in your host country.

Which are the most common payment methods in Portugal? Why would you prefer some forms over others?

Does the amount of money or the type of paid services (groceries, bills, rent, etc.) determine the choice of payment methods?

Are there any apps at your disposal which make the payment process easier in Portugal?

Can certain foreign currencies be used to make payments?

Have your habits in terms of payment methods changed since moving to Portugal?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Payment methods are pretty normal in Portugal. A lot of banks and companies like utilities or internet providers use direct debit. One can use cash, credit card or debit card for most purchases. Personally, I use my debit/ATM card for most everything. One can also pay bills or make transfers on MultiBanco (MB) machines.  I believe most all banks have online platforms for making payments as well.
