D7 visa - initial duration residence

JMH71

Hi all,

Maybe Im reading too much into this (or too tired) but Im having a hard time understanding the residency duration for a D7 visa. The website says...

This visa is a residence visa valid for two entries in the country and allows the holder to remain on Portugal for a period of 4 months. The D7 visa is intended to enable the holder to obtain a residence permit for Portugal.
Like it was mentioned before, the residence permit obtained by the way of a D7 visa is valid for a year and it can be renewed for successive periods of 2 years until it is converted into a permanent residence permit after 5 years.
The holder of a residence permit obtained from the D7 visa, calculating by the period of residence, cannot remain outside Portugal for 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months.
Members of the family of the holder of the residence permit obtained via a D7 visa are also entitled to a residence permit, based on Portuguese family reunification statues.

Does this therefore mean that armed with this visa, Im only allowed out of the country twice in a 12mth period?

Im trying to organise with my employer about coming into the London office and theyd prefer me to come in once a month (say arrive in London on a Monday and leave to go back to Porto on the following day).

One person is telling me that as long as Im not out of Portugal for a combined total of 4mth of the year (scattered throughout the year) Im ok.

But someone else has said that Id be refused entry upon my 3rd return as Im only allowed out of the country twice.

Anyone know the actual answer?

how can apply and documnt for this visa

Residence visa is issued to allow you to come to Portugal and remain for 4 months in which time you make an appointment and apply for residence permit.
You only have two entries on the visa.
Once you have been issued the residence permit you have free entrance and exit but have to reside in Portugal for total of 183 days in the year, not necessarily consecutively. You are then also resident for tax purposes. Hope this makes it clearer

Ahhh Wim thank you so much! That makes things so much easier!!!!!

I was under the understanding the D7 was for the entire year.

Hi, I too am confused with the minimum stays for a D7 Visa. Some sites state that you only have to stay for a minimum of 153 days per year in the 2nd/3rd/4th and 5th year of the residence permit. However I have also read that you must stay for a minimum of 16 months per 2 years, which makes it 8 months per year on average.

Does anyone know exactly what is correct? Thanks in advance.
