Hello,
We are a French couple too, as you would like to live in Portugal, yet we have not defined our final destination.
The silver rating or port the ideal is not to meet strangers like us in isolation, we plan to visit the country in November

Please write in English on this part of the site. At the bottom, you can change the language.

Jk1976

Hi all, after seven years in Dubai and two years back in the Netherlands, we're planning to move to Cascais in summer '22. Would appreciate to hear from people what are the best places to live with children aged 10 & 13. They'll go to Oeiras IS & Taguspark Sharing School.
We used to live in sort of a compound-type where it was quite easy to socialize with (°µÍø½ûÇø) neighbours. Still looking ideally for a townhouse or villa that offers that.

JohnnyPT

Hi Jk,

If you want that school, within a distance of 5 km you have Parede, Carcavelos, São Domingos de Rana, Oeiras, Paço d'Arcos, Caxias, Porto Salvo...

Within a 10 km distance you have Cascais, Estoril, Alcabideche, Linhó, Sintra, Belas ... Cascais has a lot of English speaking °µÍø½ûÇøs, so it shouldn't be difficult to easy to socialize, even if you don't live there, but nearby.

For example, you have this place, where there are many °µÍø½ûÇøs. And you have other international schools very close by:

Dear °µÍø½ûÇøs,

I am from Germany, in my mid-40s. I travel frequently to Portugal especially Algarve region of Faro, Lagos, Albufeira. I am contemplating investing in a holiday home, rather an apartment. Which I can rent out and may be later shift to Portugal on a long term for retirement. I would like to hear your opinions and experiences of your life in Portugal.

Cheers,
Leo

Linda Galforg

Hi everyone,

My name is Linda, and I am planning to leave the UK to relocate to central Portugal in the next 4 months to build a holiday rental portfolio. I have purchased my first 4 bed property, with land, established orchards, vineyard, and olive grove as well as a pool. I plan to develop a glamping site and add a brand-new ensuite bedroom, kitchen, and dining room to the self-contained ground floor. We have already invested in several key renovations to improve and prepare the property for full-time occupation on the first floor and rental occupation on the ground floor. We have invested and installed panels, renovated the pool and pump, built a poolside bar.

I currently run a multi-award-winning digital marketing agency in the UK and hope to build relationships with the ex-pat community in Portugal who are prepared to advise and share their stories on relocation issues and running holiday rentals in Portugal as an ex-pat. I am very willing to assist estate agents, small businesses, artists, artisans etc. who would benefit from my marketing expertise.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Linda

:( Unable to find a decent sized furnished long term rental / Coimbra.  Student town w shortage of apts.  After 4/5 months searching in person and now virtually from the US, have reluctantly switched search to Evora.  Commutable to Lisbon and lots offer,   But Coimbra was first choice;  disappointed as absolutely nothing even decent to rent there.

MirrenMirren

Hello! I am new to this forum. Planning to move from U.S. next spring. If someone could point me toward a list of "steps to take," and a safe way to secure a living space for the 6 month requirement, I would appreciate it. All advice welcome, thank you!

And now Evora. I am very interested to learn how you made this choice. I might have understood Braga or Porto or Lisbon.

Hi Mirren, Welcome :)

First of all, you will need a visa. Here are some options (this is written for the UK, but is valid for any country that requires a visa).

Hi Everyone,

My name is Matt and I will be moving to the Algarve in April/May 2022.

I'm British and I currently live in Amsterdam, and for the last 20 years I've worked in the IT recruitment industry, owning and managing businesses in London, NYC and Amsterdam.

One my close friends moved to Porches 12 months ago and I've just come back from a 1 month stay with him and I was utterly amazed at how beautiful the Algarve is.

My biggest challenge now is choosing where too live! I think for the first 12-18 months I will explore various places in Algarve before I buy my property... so any recommendations are welcome! :)

Regards,

Matt

I like Olhao and Quarteira. Good luck in choosing your home, Matt.

Hi everyone I’m a new member. An American GIA FGA gemologist moving to Evora. I have a puzzle for you guys?  How does one negotiate a start date for a rental lease if one doesn’t know when visa application is (more or less). Returned?  Do ppl just pay for time they’re not in the country?    Correct answer for this wins a prize. Cheers all!!

JohnnyPT

Hi Kimllg88,

When applying for a visa, you can choose one of these options: a), b), c) or d)

msunario

Hi all....

My name is Maya. I'm half Irish half Indonesian. I spent my childhood in Indonesia before moving to Ireland with my mother and sister. After decades there, I decided to move to somewhere warmer and have been in Portugal with my dog since July 2021. My daughter is studying in Indonesia. I am lucky to be able to work remotely and I am buying a home in Alvor in December.

msunario

My suggestion is to write it in the lease agreement that the dates may change depending on when visa is approved. Of course, if it's not approved you won't be taking up the lease anyway, right? You'll need to get that provision put in somewhere. Not all landlords would agree to this ... you may need to offer / negotiate a reservation fee / booking fee for their trouble. Best to do this during the low season / winter months.

Hello, everyone!

It’s so awesome to find a forum like this; I really am rooting for each of you and hope we can make our goals happen! :)

I go by Ches; I’m an American looking to move somewhere near the Portuguese coast by October of 2022 and eventually attain dual citizenship. Free healthcare, a low cost of living, safety (I would love to live in a place I don’t have to worry about monthly shootings down the street) the rich culture and so many other reasons have made Portugal my current goal and destination to live and work.

I have a lot planned out, but my immediate goal is find a remote job, (or even start my own online business), and make an online revenue of at least $1,200 per month. I don’t need to live luxuriously, I’d just love to afford a small rental by the sea (currently looking into Algarve, but I’ve been researching everywhere) where I can work hard from home and in my free time work on my creative pursuits. ^___^

I’m young so I don’t have a lot of professional experience under my belt yet. However, all of my work experience has included customer service, so it’s my hope to find a job related to that since I’ve been told it’s my strength. I want to eventually find an inexpensive apartment to buy and use it as a hub to travel the world!

A lot of my free time is spent researching how to make this dream of mine happen, (and also learning Portuguese by reading ‘The Alchemist’) It’s awesome to find a place to talk to other people who have the same goal! :) I’m really looking forward to chatting with all of you.

Again, nice to meet you all; let’s make this goal happen! ;)

Hello °µÍø½ûÇøs in Portugal...  My wife (MarLu) and I (Tom) are coming ASAP - hopefully by April 1.  I am coming from Texas and my wife from the Philippines.  I am waiting for my passport to formally begin the D7 Visa acquisition process, sometime in the next 8 weeks.  We are focused on the Algarve region - probably Portimao.  When the time comes the availability of a furnished T1 or T2 apartment with a one year lease will rule..  I am retired from the utility/energy sector - a Certified Energy Manager.  I am 77 years old and in super health.  My wife is significantly younger - but I am too smart to disclose her age.  I am seeking recommendations on rental agencies you have found to be professional..  We are looking forward to making new friends..

Hello all.

My name is Perry. I am planning on a trip to Portugal in the Spring of 2022, and Hope to move there within 2 years. I teach singing and am a Grammy nominee. I would love to find someone to barter voice lessons for lessons in learning to speak Portuguese. I don't know where I should post this, so I'm starting here. Any and all suggestions are most welcome.

Best regards,
Perry

JohnnyPT

Hi Perry,

You can start by joining here as a teacher for online singing lessons:

There are other websites, you should search for "aulas de canto".

On the meetup site there are some groups in Portugal for conversation in English + Portuguese, like this one:
