Covid-19 Restrictions on returning

LorieAnneC

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help me, as I am not finding an clear answer on SEF, or Portuguese consulate. I received my residency card (temporary) in November, but had to return to Canada temporarily on December 30th.

Due to the new lockdown and travel restrictions, am I on the list of people allowed back into the country?

On the IATA website it states: people with long term visas are permitted for entry. My D7 visa was issued in Portugal, so does that mean I am allowed back?

Any help in these crazy COVID-19 times would be appreciated 歹蛤

Have you tried asking a local travel agency or the airline you are planning to return with?

Both tend to be up to date when SEF (as usual) ignore emails and refuse to answer telephone calls.

Thank you. I have attempted, without success. Even my preferred airline TAP, because it offers a direct flight from Montreal to Lisbon cannot offer a definitive answer.

I realize rules and regulations are changing on a weekly basis due to this pandemic, but I love living in Portugal, and would not want my status as a resident to be taken away.

Any ideas would be most welcome

Hi,

Yours will be considered essential travel as youre travelling back to your home in Portugal and are resident there. The info at the above link shows that you can travel back to your home in Portugal. Be prepared to show authorities your D7 and PCR Covid tests.

Kind regards.

Hi LorieAnneC,

Please see this link from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

1. Which countries are authorised for air traffic?
...
4. Flights intended for the return to Portugal of Portuguese citizens or foreign citizens holding a residence permit in Portugal
...

Conclusion: although it is not an essential trip, you can come to Portugal because you have a residence permit.

But:
- you must present before boarding, proof of a laboratory test (RT-PCR) for detection of SARS-COV2 infection, with negative results, performed within 72 hours prior to boarding

- you will probably have to go through a 10-day quarantine upon arrival

- being in Portugal, you will not be able to travel, as there are still movement restrictions in the country until the end of March.

So I suggest that you should only consider returning at the beginning of April, but you should find out first how things are going on... :unsure

Hello, my husband have a temporal residency card for 5 years issued april last year 2020. He use to travel for business. Until now he did not have any problem, but he had to show both, his residency card and his passport in the borders. Maybe the police in Portugal can give you a more acurate answer.

Thank you everyone for the information. I believe I am able to get back there! Will probably wait to see how the pandemic is in May or June.
