Foreign mobile phone numbers can have MB WAY since 2019. All they need is to be associated with a Portuguese bank debit card adhering to the MBWay service (1).

You can join MB WAY with an international number through MULTIBANCO or on the MB WAY App. If you want to join in MULTIBANCO, after entering the PIN, select the option *"Deposits and other Operations>Adhesion MB WAY International Number" and follow the instructions on the screen.

So as I understand it, I cannot use the app without getting a portugeuse bank account...

Is there a prepay debit type payment card I could get in the meantime that might work.

I don't have my bank account yet since I am early in my migration.

Am I right in thinking I need tax number and portugeuse address to open a local bank account ..聽 聽or are there any work arounds ..

You can use a Wise multicurrency account (with a debit card) for example. It can be used in Portugal at Multibanco ATM&POS, with very favourable exchange rates and no transaction fees.

To open a bank account in a bank in Portugal, you need to have your tax number NIF and address proof.
