US Citizen as a Tourist...

My friend is a US citizen. He was lucky to get a 6 months tourist visa to Russia last year. But it can depend on the embassy, they can deny and give you only 1 month.聽 
You just need to have a usual voucher for 1 month and then mention in your application that you want 6 months. Voucher is easy to get in any visa company. ***
