Region recommendation for authentic Spain - retirement?

b00641103

Hi guys,

my mum and dad are looking an apartment to holiday in over the winter months, to get away from the terrible irish weather.

They love authentic spain, and have spent much time in the north, but want to buy somewhere in southern spain to guarantee some good weather in autumn and winter.

we are looking for a 2 bed apartment, with a balcony/terrace, ideally near the coast/sea.  we want to be in an area with some authenticity and plenty of traditional spanish tapas bars and seafood, we want to avoid areas filled with irish and english bars as that is what they spend their day to day lives in etc

we looked at la cala de mijas after experiencing some great seafood there, but came to realise that our 200k budget all in doesn't get us the property we want.

Can anyone recommend some good regions or towns to look at? we have 200k all in to spend, it would also be great to have somewhere we could rent out in the summer time if possible

all recommendation's welcome,

thanks

@b00641103 we are in el campello, a small market town just outside Alicante. Tram connection to the city. Lots of spanish from Madrid have holiday apartments here. The pueblo is  very spanish, close to the sea is more touristy but still kind of local. 200k gets a nice apartment.

We are in Elche a good-sized city next to Alicante, and served by Alicante-Elche Airport. This is a more typical Spanish city, UNESCO-listed for its palm groves. It has a pretty historic centre, a beautiful municipal park, and a lovely riverside walk along the Rio Vinalopo. There are several very nice beaches (La Marina, Santa Pola, Arenals del Sol) about 15km away. Our meagre stash went a LOT further here than if we'd decided we needed to be in Playa San Juan in Alicante proper. And Elche is a lovely town, we're very happy here.

But there are lots of great places along the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol.

I recommend Idealista (dot com) as it has lots of listings all over Spain. It's a great research tool to see how far your budget will stretch. Certainly 200k will get you a very nice 2 bed in many places... but be way short in others.

I'd like to recommend Aguilas. We've just bought something similar to your needs and we like the town, it's very Spanish and great for renting out in the summer.  If you'd like anymore information feel free to message me and I can give you some great contacts.  Cheers, Freda
