can i travel to europe with my NIE?

Hi guys,

im iranian student, studying in barcelona and ive got my NIE the green card with written on it " extranjeros estudiante" I wanted to know if i can travel in europe with this card? its kinda weird cuz i was studying in holland as well and the card was different and it was mentioned on the card that i can travel through schengen areas.
but with this card i dont know.
can anybody help me?

hi I travel in Europe with my NIE. You should bring your passport coz they will ask it along with the NIE.

I don't want to disagree with the other posters but I have never been able to use my NIE as ID when crossing borders if asked. Of course the chances of you being asked are low in the Schengen area, but for example, if you wish to travel to the UK you will be turned back, also you may have issues getting into/out of Switzerland.

Please note that this thread is inactive for some years.  If you read carefully what others said then you should know that you can travel with the NIE as long you have your passport with you. The passport is your travel document.
