Hello Hookfish,,,not sure if there,s any difference between us and eu we are english and had no problems everyone seems really nice and even though we cant speak spanish as yet as long as we have a go they are really helpfull. Property is cheap depending on what you want , there are a lot of bank repo,s and some are really cheap unfortunate I know for the one whose been caught up in the mess but nevertheless they are for sale. We have been here since september last and love it . As yet I havnt started with the fishing but I do know that sea fishing is good and about 1 and a half hour away are some of the biggest catfish in europe,,,Good luck    Lurcherman

Thanks! Looking at a no-vehicle location. Small. Quiet but would love to stay connected with other °µÍø½ûÇøs. We dine out often. Probably looking at $200k home. Sound rediculus to you?

200k should see you in a nice area there is a good metro system throughout valencia so not having transport wont be a major issue we are on the outskirts at a beautifull suburb called La Cañada. try google earth, the only trouble is the metro stops at 11 ish at night, if you eat out a lot the whole city is full of restaurants. Its depends on where you want to be , ie in the city , in an apartment or house near the sea or away from it inland. we are inland but only by 12k,s takes about 30 minutes to reach the sea

Hi,
are you currently in Valencia??  If so, how about we get together for a beer/wine/chat?  I just arrived, am 55.

No. Not there. Actually never visited Valencia (yet). We're just interested in a second home situation after I retire in January 2014. I've done web research and this blog...not much yet. How long are you there?

Hookfish

LaCanada...I'll look it up. Thanks! We will likely visit in late spring to get a feel for things before consulting a realtor.

Hi Hookfish,
Yes, am currently in Valencia, arrived 5 days ago July 21.  Although I'm a retired researcher (medical chemistry), frankly I never had much luck researching places virtually, always found it better to just go visit and see the place(s) for myself.  I lived in Buenos Aires Argentina for nearly 4 years, just ' escaped' , left due to the downward socio-economics there, thought I'd try Spaiin.  Have spent 4-5 days each in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, and now Valencia.  Valencia is quite different, very ' smooth'  living here, things just work.   Each place has its own pros/cons, it is a very personal choice.  Common to all places tho (except less visible in Madrid y Barcelona), is the economic downturn and resultant closed-down shops/stores/cafes and drop in real estate prices.

I'm here through August, then have to return for visa reasons, currently on a 90-day Schengen.   I advise you to not underestimate the time/effort it takes to get a long-term retirement visa, start now by contacting your nearest Spanish Consulate (depends on which State you live in).

Write me when you come, suerte with your research, and larn that Spanish!
