Car Insurance in Bahrain

joshelms98

Hi Everyone,

A couple of questions about driving in Bahrain.

If I am in Bahrain on a 6-month visit visa, am I able to drive with my UK licence or would I need to obtain an IDP? If so, would this IDP be authorised in Bahrain as I wouldn't have a CPR number?

Also, with car insurance, does the insurance cover the car or the person? I have family in Bahrain and so am wondering if I could drive their car without taking out any extra insurance policy.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can drive on your UK license but the car has to be a rental car.   If you drive your family's car, their insurance policy would not cover any damage as for most policies, issued locally, the driver has to hold a valid driving license of Bahrain and be a resident.

@XTang thank you!

@XTang sorry a quick follow up - for a resident to get a Bahraini driving licence, do they need to take a driving test if they hold a UK licence or do they simply need to apply for a local licence? Thanks again!

No test.  UK license can be converted to a Bahraini one (they will give you a Bahraini license and not keep the UK one).
