Packing to work and live in Kuwait

scottishheather

I'm coming to Kuwait in a few weeks to teach English and panicking  a bit about what to pack. I have quite a few long dresses and skirts with sleeves but worried that they will be too tight. They are not skin-tight but do show my figure although they are not low-cut, if that makes sense. I'm struggling to find cardigans etc to go over them and worried that it will be too hot. Is it easy to buy suitable things there? Are bright colours acceptable? Are trousers generally worn by women on a daily basis?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Hi Heather
I was worried about the same - I've only been here three weeks from the UK, and now as far as I can see as long as you cover your knees and shoulders you can wear most things - i packed to keep cool (loose midlength skirts etc) but it is just too hot to be outside for most of the day so I actually tend to go out in skinny jeans and t-shirts most of the time because we usually sit inside in the a/c! Most women wear trousers, I wouldnt worry about bright colours - just the cut - and there is debenhams, H and M, marks and sparks here and lots more etc, lots of shopping to be done - it is a little more expensive though. Everywhere is air conned and it gets quite chilly inside sometimes! I wouldn't wear REALLY skin tight stuff, but it doesn't need to be mens clothes either - I still wear girly fitted tees! It just seems to be that if you wear something with a cut designed to get you noticed then that may cause unwanted attention. I wouldnt wear anything low cut or too lacy or see through for example. Otherwise, its seems quite relaxed. You see occasional locals wandering around wearing strappy/tight/see through ish stuff, but wearing this as a westerner would likely attract unwanted attention.
Are you heading out on your own? I came out on my own, and there are definitely some places I wouldn't hang around on my own -  mostly main roads/some malls at night, but other than that it seems ok and people seem very friendly. Hope this is vaguely useful! :)

Hi Ally,

Thanks so much! This has been so helpful and some other people have sent me PMs to advise me so much calmer now. Heading out alone but to work for the British Council, what are you doing out there?

Always nice to meet another Brit when travelling, hopefully we can meet up when I arrive, are you in Kuwait City?

Hi Heather, glad you feel a bit more relaxed about it - it is a fairly daunting experience, I had no idea what to expect! But I've found it a really nice place so far. Yes a coffee and a chin wag sounds like fun! I'm in Salmiya... do you know if you'll be living in the city? Its not too far if you are and I go in every now and again for dinner or a bit of a touristy day! Let me know and we can make a plan. When do you get here? :)

Interestingly both my wife and I are intending to move in October.  So all this information is very useful for us too.

KevanV

Nope... not New Jersey, but the original Jersey next to France.

Ahhh interesting.........
I was raised in New Jersey.
I've never met anyone from "Jersey".
Forgive my ignorance but, it's a country right?

Jersey is a small island near France.  It has it's own government and laws but also has the UK Queen.

New Jersey got it's name by the Carteret Family in Jersey when they were given all the land before the American Civil war although I'm not sure of all the details.  His descendant went to school with me.

Glad it was helpful :-) What are you going to be doing here?

scottishheather

Thanks :)

I should be arriving on Thursday, they are booking my flight on Sunday. Going to be working in the city but have been looking at apartments in Salmiya, it's all a bit confusing!

How hot is it right now?

KevanV

According to my phone it's:
Sat 44
Sun 44
Mon 42
Tue 42
Wed 44

I'm deciding what to pack... luckily my work allow 270kg of stuff... so that's my wife's shoes taken care of ;)

scottishheather

Very generous! I get 100kg plus my hold luggage on the flight. Wow could do with some heat just now!

Ally8

Yes its pretty warm just now, but everywhere is well air conditioned so bring a couple of warm things with you... some places actually get pretty chilly! Its a dry heat so its bearable and quite pleasant in the evenings. Shopping is a hobby here so theres plenty of places to pick things up if you need! Apparently it gets quite cold in winter... <10 degrees which is hard to believe now :)

KevanV

I'm in Kuwait for a few days (two weeks time) then will be moving one month later.
Thanks for the advice to bring some warmer clothes, we'll bring some.  I do think that I'm going to struggle with my summer clothes... I think I'll need to buy some light weight trousers. Perhaps I'll wait until I get there though.
