moving to Qatar for work

Bwill

Hi,

My wife and I are thinking about moving to Qatar for work.  However, we have some questions and wondering if you might be able to answer them from us?

1. How strict are their laws about holding hands in public?
2. Do you find there are fun and interesting things to do in your free time?  We are very active people and love being out doors is there things to do?
3. Does your wife have to dress conservative?  Is she able to wear shorts, tank tops?
4. How expensive is the food?
5. Is the city easy to get around in?

As you can tell we have all kinds of questions.  I thank you for your time and helping us out.

Hi,

Don't worry!!  I wrote a long post of self reflection and it got deleted (my mistake) so I will try to make it short. It's normal to be apprehensive when moving to any other country. Checking recent experiences is the best way you can do it, and you got to balance different points of view. We're are relocating to Kuwait and believe me, what I am finding makes me already miss Qatar!

Holding hands is not an issue anymore.

Regarding fun things to do, depends on you and your interests, but there are all sort of different things to keep you busy. You need to be in touch with people for sure, and there are many clubs, informal groups, churches,... There are nightclubs and lots of sports events to watch and to participate in.

Dress code has become more liberal recently (Even I frown upon some stuff young women are wearing... but I reckon you and your wife will not be wearing such things. It is hot but most places have a freezing A/C all time so it is advisable to wear proper attire)

Food is cheap compared to the UK unless you insist on particular products, in which case you got to buy them at expensive supermarkets. Apart from pork you can get practically anything you like. Alcohol consumption is NOT an issue here, you just have to get a special license to purchase it. You can drink beer/wine in restaurants. Driving UI is a major NO as in many other countries, zero tolerance.

Traffic has improved a lot in the last years and it is really advisable to have a map / GPS in your car for the first weeks to orient yourself, but I found best to drive around the city to get to know it.

Hope this helps to reassure you a little more, you are coming to a country that is improving by the day although I honestly miss a little bit those days when it wasn't so 'westernised'.
