I dont know Dammam, but as an educator, there should be a Jarrier bookstore somewhere - a good place to loose some time - books are inexpensive here.

I'll ask around for the Jarrier.  I thought I brought a lot of reading material...but the way things are going I'll need more in a few days.  Nice suggestion!

I do know Dammam...and I am an educator.

Are you in Dammam proper or are you in Al Khobar or Dharhan...all (for some reason) seem to be called "Dammam".

If you are in Dammam proper, there are a couple of shopping malls you can visit...during the day.  Check to see if they have "family" hours in the evening, in which case a single male would be unwelcome.

Dammam proper has a beautiful Corniche (park along the waterfront) that runs for miles and miles and miles.  There are a few scattered restaurants along it, but by and large, it's just a nice long park that you can kill some time starting at the waves and waiting for your family.

Jarir's is indeed a place to kill some time.  Also (if you have a car) explore some of the area along the coast (easiest to not get lost in, for sure).  South of where you are (and you can hug the coast to do this) is Al Khobar, which has many Western establishments along the area fronting its Corniche.

There are souqs and shopping malls to explore, enclaves of Indians and Filipinos...

As far as not knowing what to say or do...don't sweat it too much.  Don't stare at the Darth Vaders you see everywhere, make sure you go in the "Single" entrance to any restaurant and just be polite.

Welcome to the forum, livibeans! I am moving to Jubail as well in the next couple of months and I have a daughter who'll be one year old next month. Our ages are quite close (my husband and I are 32 and 31 respectively). He's French and an engineer (and has been in Jubail for 2 months now) and I'm a webdesigner. I know that Dammam and Jubail aren't so far away, so if ever you and your family would like to meet or hang out and let the kids play, hope we can plan it when we do finally get there. In the meantime, hope you find some interesting stuff to do to tide you over till your family joins you. Bonne chance!

Oh and how do I recognize the "single" entrances of restaurants?

It says "Single" above the door or "Men Only".  If it says "Family Entrances" that ain't the one.
